That iz niiize. High five!
***This is just a personal rant about the controversy surrounding Borat. So feel free not to read. Just putting it out there.***Borat. I find it possibly even more hilarious than the movie itself (which is a pretty big feat considering my body was exhausted after laughing itself silly and tensing up the moment I saw a man wearing a NEBRASKA HUSKERS sweatshirt enter the most bigoted and ignorant rodeo arena in the US) that the people who agreed to be in the movie are now suing the creators. (Can't wait for my UK friends to see it and associate that crowd and the comments made there with Nebraska...)
Example A. Two drunken frat boys. Does the fact that they were "wasted" make it anymore okay to make racist and sexually discriminatory comments? They made asses out of themselves because they are, in fact, asses. The fact that the whole country now knows it, well - don't sign things when you're drunk. Did they pour the drinks down your throat? No one is responsible for your behavior or the things that come out of your mouth but YOU. I think that alone shows how much character you hold.
And this giant tizzy and controversy that it "went too far" - well, no. It gave an honest look into what kind of creeps you can still find in this country, and the treatment someone can receive who is the slightest bit different from an "American" - whatever that is. As for it being labeled as "racist" and "anti-feminist", the only people who came off looking like assholes, were the white, middle-class men who are, in fact, ignorant assholes. How is it that a crowd who actually cheered to "George Bush drinking the blood of every man, woman, and child in Iraq" is not being targeted for criticism? What does THAT say about our country? His anti-Semitic comments? Come on people - Sacha Baron Cohen...doesn't that sound the LEAST BIT jewish? He is from an Orthodox Jewish family! If anything, this movie was a brilliant tool to uncover the racism, prejudice, and sexism that truly do still exist in this country...maybe it's about time that people stopped kidding themselves into thinking it's a problem of the past and opened up their eyes. Perhaps this giant controversy is exactly what the aim of the film was in the first place - perhaps people will learn to think before they speak.
And above all - IT"S AN EFFING COMEDY! Sacha Cohen is a COMEDIAN! Take it with a grain of salt and the eight dollars YOU paid to see it, or at least take a small lesson on intercultural communication from it. WahwahwEEEwah!

Okay that's all for that. Sorry. Just been reading news articles and seeing news reports about it - making me laugh.
Back here in the land of the NEBRASKA HUSKERS, things are aight I guess. I went to see the opera La Boheme on Friday night which was pretty beautiful and wonderful. It was partly the basis for RENT - just in case you didn't know. The girl who played the lead used to sit by me in choir my freshmen year - now she is a grad student and holy hell has she grown some operatic lungs. (PS - Kristen, mr. baritone from Carmina Burana was in it - yay!) Big exam tomorrow (for which the studying has been postponed due to a 3 hour nap from which I have just awoken. Studying is overrated. Ummm...really nothing else exciting to report. Peace out. High five!

Okay edit. I just read an article about the village in Romania that was used as Borat's home village - they can sue the bejesus out of the film creator's because they were portrayed in a very negative light and not explained what was going on. The vice-pres of the company made some disgusting comments about the people there, and they only paid the people the equivalent of about 6 US dollars to be in the film. So with that, I do not agree. It's one thing to unveil the serious character flaws of our soceity's mentality and so-called equality, but this was something completely different.
